Why Choose a Soft Structured Carrier (SSC)?

Why Choose a Soft Structured Carrier (SSC)?

First of all, what is a soft structured carrier?

An SSC is similar to a mei tai, but instead of fastening with long straps which must be tied, they fasten by the use of buckles. Soft structured carriers, as the name suggests, are more structured than mei tais, and have a heavily padded waistband, which provides a good deal of support. They are quite stiff and less flexible than other carriers and slings.

How do I use it?

It is amongst the most simple to use, and tends to be popular with modern parents due to the buckle fastening. Simply clip the waist strap shut, lift the baby in, and pull the back up, so that the baby is sitting in the pouch. Put your arms through the straps and fasten, tightening them if neccessary.

What age is it suitable for?

Due to the structure of the SSC, it is great for older babies, and some can even be used up to 55lb! The padded waistband means that virtually all the child’s weight is distributed through the wearer’s hips, so carrying a heavier child is much easier than with other sling options.

Can I carry my baby in different positions?

Yes, SSC’s can be used to carry a baby on the wearer’s front or back. Some can also be used in a hip carry positions, which again makes them a popular choice.

Any down sides?

Due to the structured aspect, SSCs tend to be quite bulky, and will not fit into most changing bags, so not a great option if you are likely to want to take it on and off. They are not the best choice for breastfeeding in, although it is possible, and they are not the ideal for newborns due to being less flexible.
Some of the more readily available baby carriers, which could be categorised as SSCs do not hold the baby in the best position for a healthy spine and hips – instead they can tend to allow the baby to dangle by their pelvis, which puts stress on the baby’s spine, rather than holding them in a seated position, where the weight is spread across the bottom and legs. When choosing an SSC try to ensure that your baby will be carried in the recommended position.

Why should I choose one?

They are probably the quickest of all baby carriers to put on, and can be used for long periods. They are quite versatile, with several carrying positions, and distribute the weight very well. They are usually a popular choice for hiking, and with dads! As with most baby carriers or slings, there are now many brands available, each with it’s own variations.
