Why Choose a Wrap?

Why Choose a Wrap?

First of all, what is a wrap?

There are two kinds of wraps – stetchy and woven. Both are long pieces of fabric, usually about 5m in length. Stretchy wraps are made from fabric which has a substantial amount of elasticity, such as cotton jersey or cotton lycra. Woven wraps are made from woven fabrics, and have enough stretch in them to give a little for comfort, but no more.

How do I use it?

Very simply, the long piece of fabric is wrapped around the wearer and the baby, forming a pouch which secures baby close to the wearer’s body, and the ends are then knotted together. There are many ways of wrapping the fabric, and which method you choose depends on the position you want to carry your baby in, and your personal preference.

Both stretchy wraps and woven wraps are suitable for use from birth, although due to the amount of stretch, a stretchy wrap will more than likely only last until the baby is about one year old.

A woven wrap will last longer, and are most supportive for the wearer.

Can I carry my baby in different positions?

Yes. Both woven and stretchy wraps can be used in a variety of positions, for various aged babies. Newborns are best held in a “cradle carry”, and there are many ways to position the baby on both the wearer’s front and back. They can even be knotted and used essentially like a pouch sling, if so desired.

Any down sides?

The learning curve is steeper than for some other carriers, and the sheer amount of fabric involved can be daunting. They are probably the most “hippyish” of the baby carriers, and may not appeal to everyone. Because of the length of the fabric, until you are experienced, they are not very easy to put on without the fabric falling on the floor – which is not great in a muddy car park. Different brands and fabrics vary radically in the amount of stretch, and in general, the more lengthwise stretch, the less supportive the carrier will tend to be for a heavier or older baby – something to bear in mind when choosing a wrap.

Stephanie WilkinWhy should I choose one?

Wraps are very versatile carriers, and one size fits all, so great if you are sharing the babywearing. They are make discrete breastfeeding easy, and are very comfortable for both baby and wearer. Stretchy slings are great if you wish to tie the sling first, and then pop the baby in, although woven wraps should be tied with the baby in place. Generally wraps make lovely snugly carriers, and keep baby very secure against the wearer. As with most baby carriers or slings, there are now many brands available, each with it’s own variations of colour and design.
